THE GAME: Clayton Kershaw’s last vote before opening day was ugly. He allowed nine runs in 3-1 / 3-innings when the Oakland A defeated the Dodgers 11-0 on Friday night in an eight-inning game at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona.
PITCHING REPORT: Kershaw should throw five innings and maybe a sixth on his last preseason start. But he was charged with nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits (including three doubles and one triple) and two walks in just 3-1 / 3 innings. A mistake by shortstop Corey Seager extended a long second inning. But Kershaw gave up hard contact throughout the trip. During his last two starts in the Cactus League (he threw a B game in between), Kershaw gave up 14 runs with 17 hits and three walks in just 7-1 / 3 innings. … Left-handed Victor Gonzalez replaced Kershaw with an out and the bases were loaded in the fourth inning. He went in two runs before he could close the inning. … Right-hander Corey Knebel met two batters in the fifth inning and had to quit the game after the second threw a ball back at him. The drive seemed to catch gag on his left arm or wrist and take off his glove. Gag picked up the ball and threw it out on the first base. … Right-handed Bobby Miller (the Dodgers’ first round draft pick last year) threw two goalless innings, allowed one hit, and hit three.
HIT REPORT: The Dodgers were held off without a hit by Cole Irvin until a groundball single from Gavin Lux led the sixth inning. The Dodgers’ only other base runner in the first seven innings was Mookie Betts on a first inning walk. It was immediately doubled back to the hill from the first base on a liner. … James Outman’s bloop double with two outs in the eighth was her only other hit in the game. … Cody Bellinger was 0 for 3 with two spikes. He’s 3 for 21 (.143) in seven games this spring.
DEFENSE REPORT: Miller made the game of the night, bounced off the hill to catch a dribbler in the grass near the third baseline, got up and knocked Pete Kozma into first with just one strong throw.
