DUBAI: Coco Gauff had problems closing and had to save two match points before he fended off Ekaterina Alexandrova with 7-6 (3), 2-6, 7-6 (8) to go into the second round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship.
The 16-year-old American led 5-1 in the third set and had two chances to finish the match. In game ten he held four match points, but Alexandrova rallied to force a tiebreaker. Gauff then had to save match points in the tiebreaker before taking the final three points to finish the match in 2 hours and 40 minutes.
« There were times when we could both have thrown in the towel and given up but we both fought mentally. I think it’s just one of those who you’re glad you fought it over and happy you fought it through, « said Gauff said.
Gauffs 17 Birthday is next Saturday, the same day as the final in Dubai. « That would be a pretty good birthday present to make it to the final, » she said. The first eight seeds had a goodbye in the first round.
In other games on Sunday, Ons Jabeur opened with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Katerina Siniakova and Barbora Krejcikova, the 16 seeded Maria Sakkari 6: 2, 7: 6 (4) angry. The experienced Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova won 6: 4, 1: 6, 6: 5 against Wang Qiang and went into the second round together with Anastasija Sevastova and Alize Cornet.
