FC Schalke 04 hired Greek coach Dimitrios Grammozis on Tuesday as the fifth coach of a terrible season.
The 42-year-old Grammozis – a former midfielder with 143 Bundesliga games for Hamburger SV, Kaiserslautern and Cologne – signed one Contract until June 2022, said the Gelsenkirchen-based club in a statement.
In a statement, he said he was « really looking forward to this task », although Schalke only won one league game and won 16 of their 23 games this season This is his first coaching job in the Bundesliga, after playing 143 games in the top German league as a midfielder for Hamburg, Cologne and Kaiserslautern.
The German-born Greek recently coached the second division Darmstadt, which he left after two years at the end of last season.
He started his football career in 1984 at TuS Neviges in the Velbert district.
