TAMPA – Domingo German was greeted by a pretty typical reception of the crowd on the Steinbrenner Field on Friday afternoon.
If you didn’t know better, you would have no idea that it was the right-hander’s first game after his MLB -Banned for violating the domestic violence league protocols that cost him the entire 2020 season.
And on the hill, Deutsch reminded observers why the Yankees had chosen to stay with him stay after his ban ended.
The 28-year-old knocked out two of the top three batters he faced on his goalless two-inning foray.
« It was exciting to hit the field again being with my teammates again, « said German through an interpreter after his performance against the Tigers. « I felt relaxed and confident. »
It showed how sharp Deutsch looked as he scored four hits and only gave up one double in his 31-pitch performance.
German pointed out that his stint pitching winter ball in his native Dominican Republic was one of the keys to his effectiveness in his first major league action since September 18, 2019 and his first start since September 6th.
« I’m with satisfied with the job, « said German of his ability to stay in shape during his suspension. “The pitching in the winter ball gave me the confidence that I can still keep up at a high level. The trust is great. It reassured me that I could still compete and get back to the pitcher I was in 2019. «
He’s now trying to win a spot in the rotation and impressed Gary Sanchez, who was behind the record.
» He was hot out there, « said Sanchez through an interpreter. “I thought he was great. His move was very effective. I saw trust from him and I wanted that. «
Sanchez said German was » the same guy, the same mug, the same Domingo German I saw in 2019. The quality of the seats was there. «
