Northern Iowa started the season on a 3-10 skid but started playing better in late January. The Panthers have won 4-1 in their last five games, beating Valparaiso once and Illinois State three times, including Thursday’s tournament win.
In Thursday’s 65:60 win against the Redbirds, Austin Phyfe from Northern Iowa led the team with 21 points with nine rebounds and two steals. The Panthers had a 35:31 lead in the second half to take the win.
Over on the Drake side, their year started off brilliantly with an 18-0 break. The Bulldogs lost two of their next three to Valparaiso and Loyola Chicago, but then rattled off another five straight wins. However, Drake fell to Bradley in their last game on February 27.
In the 67-61 defeat by Bradley, Joseph Yesufu was Drake’s top scorer with 21 points, one rebound and one assist. Garrett Sturtz doubled to 12 points with 11 rebounds and DJ Wilkins had 14 points with two boards and two assists.
PICK: I will stay with Drake. The Bulldogs are a reliable team most of the year and when they get to the point they can play with almost anyone. Drake had an offensive dud in their last game against Bradley, but before that they had 74 or more points in four consecutive games. This should be the cover of the Bulldogs when they show their abilities.
