World news – Facebook to restore Australia news feed after deal with government on law

Facebook said Tuesday it would lift a controversial ban on Australian news sites after the government agreed to amend a world’s first media law violently opposed by the tech giant.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg and Facebook said that a compromise had been reached on key aspects of a law that would force global tech companies to pay news companies for content that appears on their platforms.

« Because of these changes, we can now work to increase our investment in promote public interest journalism and restore news on Facebook for Australians in the coming days, « said Will Easton, executive director of Facebook Australia.

The social media company sparked worldwide outrage last week by posting news for its Australian users and accidentally blacked out a number of Face blocked book pages unrelated to news, from cancer charities to emergency services.

The compromise means Facebook and Google – the law’s primary goals – are unlikely to be penalized as long as they have agreements with local ones Media companies meet to pay for news.

The two companies had objected to laws making negotiations with media companies mandatory and had given an independent Australian arbitrator the right to reach an agreement.

« We’re delighted us that we were able to reach an agreement with the Australian government and appreciate the constructive discussions we have had, « said Easton.

Despite previous threats to withdraw its services from Australia because of the legislation, Google already had its stance softened and drained of multi-million dollar business with a variety of media companies closed, including the two largest: Rupert Murdochs News Corp. and Nine Entertainment.
