Tobias Gourlay supports today’s EFL Trophy favorites to get the job done quickly at Wembley this afternoon
« The Black Cats were leading the 8/10 league wins under Lee Johnson during the break. »
Portsmouth had their chances at Wembley yesterday, but Salford City, who eventually won a penalty shootout 4-2 and became the 2020 EFL Trophy Champion, drew 0-0. Unfortunately, Covid’s demands mean that Salford will have to return the first trophy they have ever won as a football club.
Sunderland will face Tranmere Rovers in the 2021 EFL Trophy final this afternoon. Sunderland is the favorite of the odds, despite failing to take a trophy at the end of the last seven Wembley finals (D2-L5 in 90 minutes since winning the 1973 FA Cup Final).
Lee Johnson’s Sunderland recently picked up 19 out of 21 possible points in the first division and climbed to fourth place in the table. Tranmere has been similarly good in the second division: since Keith Hill took command, they have been W12-D3-L5 at home and away, winning nine of the last twelve to reach fifth place in the table.
Tranmere has in met at least twice in each of his last six EFL Trophy games, but has to forego top scorer James Vaughan in that game as he takes on a Sunderland defense who have recently conceded 5/6 League One games. </ At the other end of the field, Tranmere has only conceded three goals in 12 second division games and is vulnerable to higher league opponents whose own striker Charlie Wyke (16 goals in 19 games in 2021) is fit and available. </ With that question mark about Tranmeres firepower, we're going to take Sunderland to beat them. The Black Cats were leading the 8/10 league wins under Johnson during the break and will face a shaky Tranmere defense today to be 45 minutes and 90 minutes ahead of the half-time / full-time market.
