The former head of the Supreme Constitutional Court of Egypt was elected the country’s new parliamentary speaker on Tuesday, reports the Anadolu agency.
Farida Shobashi, who was the oldest MP to chair the session, made a public statement after the vote announced that Hanafy Ali El-Gebali was elected with a majority of votes and that his four rivals remained behind in the first round.
El-Gebali, who won with 508 of 576 votes, thanked all MPs in his speech.
In the Egyptian parliament, where there are 596 members, 28 members are appointed directly by the president.
