Arsenal defender Jennifer Beattie has opened up her battle with breast cancer and admitted that she « automatically » thought the worst after being diagnosed.
Beattie has played a prominent role in Arsenal’s line-up since returning to the club from Manchester City in June 2019.
She won five major trophies during his early stint with the Gunners between 2009 and 2013, becoming a fan favorite in the process, but her first season proved frustrating due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The Women’s Super League decided to abandon the campaign in May, which meant Arsenal had to make do with third place and ultimately failed to succeed in either the Champions League or the FA Cup when the two competitions resumed in August or. September.
Joe Montemurro’s team made a strong recovery at the beginning of the 2020/21 season and after eight games rose to second place in the WSL standings – one point behind leaders Manchester United.
Beattie has scored and scored once in four of these games, but has had to balance her job with regular hospital appointments in recent months.
The 29-year-old was diagnosed with cancer in October, which made her fear for her life. However, the support she has received from Arsenal’s players and staff has helped her through a frightening period.
« It seems like a massive blur, » Beattie told BBC Sport. « You automatically think the worst. I asked the question, « Am I going to die? » – I asked her that.
« I was grateful that they allowed my club doctor to schedule an appointment with me to ask the right medical questions because I had no idea.
Earlier this year @ JBeattie91 discovered a lump … She was diagnosed with breast cancer. Now Jen tells her story in an effort to raise awareness and save lives. @ JBeattie91 ❤️
« The girls here were just amazing. I feel like it is moments like this or times like this when you realize why you are exercising. It’s really like being part of a family outside of the family.
« I don’t know what I would have done without her. That’s the staff and the players. They were all amazing. The support I had down here surely got me through. «
Beattie will be battling for a spot on Montemurro’s squad again when Arsenal make a trip to City on Sunday.
