World news – GB – BBC divorce drama starring Tom Hollander receives mixed response from viewers

BBC One’s new divorce drama Us has received a mixed response from viewers following its premiere tonight (September 20).

Adapted from David Nicholls’ 2014 novel of the same name, Us stars Tom Hollander as Douglas Petersen, a man who is blindsided by his wife Connie (Saskia Reeves) when she says she wants to leave him.

Having already planned a massive family trip around Europe, the couple agree to go ahead with the holiday for the sake of their rather annoying son Albie (Tom Taylor).

Douglas sees the trip as the perfect opportunity to change Connie’s mind about leaving him, but as he struggles to be the fun, spontaneous person she desires, it clearly won’t be an easy task.

The opening episode of the mini-series received a mix response from viewers, with many describing it as ‘slow’, while others appeared to enjoy Hollander’s performance as dreary man in agony.

« The #BBCUs is very slow. Some good observational moments but not enough to keep #Us watching. Shame as I loved the book, » tweeted one viewer.

Another wrote: « Desperately trying to get through this first episode, but drawn out dialogue about Douglas getting his 10,000 steps and the son’s photography being in focus is making for some really monotonous viewing. #Us. »

« Immediate reaction to #BBC Sunday Night drama #Us. Whimsy. Too much flippin’ whimsy in the adult story. Back story’s fine and actually worth watching. Hollander & Reeves are both excellent actors. But the script and staging are bloody annoying,  » added another.

I don’t usually watch TV adaptations of my favourite books, but so glad I gave #Us a go tonight. It’s fabulous. Tom Hollander is the perfect Douglas. So funny and sweet and sad.

Everyone seems to be trying so hard to make this work it’s a shame it’s so bland #Us

One episode in, and Tom Hollander as Douglas in #Us is cracking me up – and breaking my heart. It’s a wonderful performance. @BBCOne

Us continues next Sunday at 9pm on BBC One, but if you can’t wait until then, the whole series is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
