BMW star Colin Turkington returned to the top of the British Touring Car Championship with a flag victory – plus the fastest lap – in race one at Snetterton
Turkington soaked up the pressure on a slippery track, after an overnight rain, as he warmed up the tires on his West Surrey Racing BMW 330i M Sport
He also had an advantage being on the driest indoor racing line on the grid, which saw first-outside line debutant Jake Hill lose ground at the start and give up second to Tom Ingram.
Ingram’s Toyota Corolla, run by Speedworks Motorsport, traveled outside Turkington to Agostini in the first lap, but was sidelined by the BMW, and the loss of speed allowed the Honda Hill’s AmD’s MB Motorsport Civic Type R to descend inside on Hamilton’s next lap
Ingram kept Turkington under pressure in the first two laps, but the four-time champion had extended his advantage beyond a second by the end of the fourth round of 12
Now it was Hill making progress, and he thought he saw a gap in the Williams hairpin at half distance
It wasn’t quite big enough, and there was a collision, Ingram swiveled wide and the Honda passed quickly, before Hill let the Toyota come forward to avoid any penalty after the race.
This extended Turkington’s lead to over four seconds, and the charge ingram could only reduce it to 2,570 at the checkered flag
« We were all worried at Team BMW because we had the wet tires on while we were sitting in the garage and it was taking a long time to dry, but in the end it turned around and we moved on with slicks
« The first lap was a little tough – as the leader you do the experimentation, but I knew if I could keep Jake and Tom behind I had a good chance of converting the race »
The Ingram / Hill incident saw Rory Butcher’s Ford Focus Motorbase Performance end up among them, but the Scotsman fell and finished fourth
Butcher was another slow starter off the grid, as was the points leader before the weekend Ash Sutton’s Laser Tools Racing Infiniti Q50
Sutton had a clash with Butcher’s teammate Ollie Jackson against Riches from the start, while Tom Oliphant’s BMW spun past them, but Sutton always emerged in fifth, behind Dan Cammish’s Honda, led by Team Dynamics
Butcher pushed his way past Sutton for fifth place at the Esses, then allowed Cammish to finish fourth in the hairpin in lap five
Cammish also fell prey to Sutton, against Oggies in the seventh lap, and he was just ahead of Adam Morgan’s Mercedes A-Class Ciceley Motorsport at the finish
Sutton’s fifth place means he now shares the seed with Turkington, with Cammish eight points behind and Ingram 23 behind
The Excelr8 Motorsport Hyundais made good progress in the top 10, but Senna Proctor couldn’t keep Josh Cook’s Honda BTC behind as the two-time winner Croft took eighth place at Proctor
Chris Smiley’s second Hyundai lost last place in the top 10 to Michael Crees (BTC Honda) with three laps to go
Oliphant came back to 14th after his first turn, but the longer delayed Jackson was only able to reach 21st
