Every region of Derbyshire, including Derby, now has a weekly rate of Covid-19 cases above 100 per 100,000 population
In the most recent data for the week of October 5-11, each district in the county exceeded 100 or more cases per 100,000 population, up from just over a week earlier, during the week from September 23 to 29, none of the districts had exceeded 100
The highest rate was in High Peak with 62 followed by Amber Valley and Erewash on 38 and North East Derbyshire on 37, all areas which will be subject to level two restrictions from 1201h Saturday
Part of Derbyshire – Glossopdale in the High Peak – has been plunged into level two restrictions and dubbed ‘high risk’ This will be reviewed in four weeks
The High Peak currently has a rate of 188 cases – double the national average of 89 – with 174 new cases in the week of October 5-11
Other areas of the county will now also be placed in level 2, with Erewash, Chesterfield and north-eastern Derbyshire joining Glossopdale from Saturday 17th October
Over the past week, Erewash has seen its case rate drop from 38 to 168 with 194 new infections
At the same time, North East Derbyshire has seen its case rate drop from 37 to 167 with 169 new cases
Leicester was put on lockdown when it surpassed 135 cases per 100,000 in June – it currently has a rate of 178 cases, just above Erewash and north-eastern Derbyshire
The North East Derbyshire District encircles three quarters of the Borough of Chesterfield, the remaining eastern quarter being closed by the Bolsover District
It may well be that Chesterfield had to join North East Derbyshire at level two so that the townspeople were not surrounded by areas with increased measures
Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins called for a ‘kill switch’ lockdown to ‘protect the NHS, fix testing and control the virus’ and said the new measures would not be enough
During the week of October 4-10, the areas of northeastern Derbyshire with the most cases revolved around Dronfield
The cases appear to originate from Sheffield on ‘high alert’, where many residents are traveling for work, showing a similar issue with residents of Glossopdale traveling to Manchester on ‘high alert’
The district’s rate is four times higher than a week ago with 169 cases in the week of Oct. 5-11, and area MP Lee Rowley said discussions were ongoing but ‘no decision had been taken
Chesterfield’s case rate has increased sevenfold in just over a week – 143 cases per 100,000 people compared to 21
This is likely due to residents of surrounding areas where commuting rates to Chesterfield for work, study and leisure are higher, and those in the city who do the same, such as Manchester or Sheffield
Erewash represents the border between Derby and Nottingham – which has the highest rate in the country and is at level 2
During the week of September 27 to October 3, 74 new cases occurred in the Erewash areas bordering Nottingham and that number rose to 120 for the week of October 3 to 9
The county, including the city, is now pushing that number every day, with 252 cases on October 8 alone
During the week of October 1-7, Derbyshire recorded 1,256 new cases, double the previous week and tenfold the amount a month before
The rate of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 population in each district of Derbyshire for the week of October 5-11, followed by the number of cases is:
For comparison, the average rate in England is 89 cases per 100,000 population, while in Leicester it is 178 (631 new cases) and in Nottingham it is 892 (2,970 new cases)
