A two-time penalty from Bruno Fernandes gave Manchester United a 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, the Premier League’s first home win.
Fernandes’ first attempt was saved by West Brom keeper Sam Johnstone, but umpire David Coote ordered the kick to be re-kicked after deciding the keeper had strayed from his line. The Portuguese midfielder made no mistake on the second attempt.
Winless West Brom’s frustration was doubled by the fact that the penalty given by Darnell Furlong for a handball came eight minutes after a penalty was lifted after verification.
Coote pointed after deciding that Fernandes made shin-to-shin contact with Conor Gallagher in the penalty area, but the referee overturned his decision after being sent to the pitchside monitor.
“Instead of us being one, we’re 1-0 and it’s hard to come back. We then showed that we hadn’t stopped believing or playing. I am very disappointed with the result and the referee’s decisions, ”said West Brom manager Slaven Bilic.
Substitute Callum Robinson came in 65. West Brom equalized in the minute with an excellent curling shot that hit the crossbar.
The win brought United over local rivals Manchester City to ninth place, 13 points, seven points behind leaders Tottenham Hotspur. West Brom remained in third place with three points.
While performance may be lacking, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was delighted to pass a tricky game and take the points.
“It’s nice that you win after the international break. We needed that win at home. We looked unsettled towards the end, although we should score another goal or two for a more relaxed finish, ”he said.
“Tight margins decide games, but the mood is determined by the results. It’s up to us to build momentum, we have a chance to continue our good start in the Champions League and Southampton is a very difficult game too. Hopefully we can get a few more back (from an injury) and get started. ”
