World News – GB – Fleetwood Town 5-1 Plymouth Argyle: Pilgrims do not win first division away from home

A dominant performance from Fleetwood Town will be a wake-up call for Ryan Lowe’s high-flying pilgrims.

The game, with Plymouth Argyle making all five substitutions before the start of the second half, always looked like it would only end in one direction.

Goals from Sam Finley, Wes Burns, Charlie Mulgrew and a brace from Callum Camps made it look like men against boys.

A consolation goal by Luke Jephcott did little for the pilgrims, and an injury time for Niall Canavan left salt in the wounds.

Argyle had events underway and had a chance to strike early. Byron Moore sent a low cross into the box and Dom Telford hit the near post. The striker had one foot in but the stab was blocked by a Fleetwood defender.

Fleetwood opened accounts in the third minute. Panutche Camara was expropriated by Finley, who ran from the depths before firing outside the box. A distraction helped him in his efforts to get the Argyle steward, Mike Cooper.

The trawler men doubled their lead three minutes later. A header courtesy of Paddy Madden landed in the pilgrim’s box at the foot of Camps, who managed to get the ball past Cooper before sticking the ball into the empty net.

Argyle didn’t look discouraged, however, and soon had his own chance. A first Telford pass found Danny Mayor on the left. The pilgrims’ talisman went into the box and forced Jayson to rescue Leutwiler.

A brief spell of possession ensued for Argyle, but nothing came of it before Fleetwood took the reins back.

A good save by Cooper in 32nd. With no hope of Argyle making a comeback in the minute, he shot deep to meet Josh Morris’s curling attempt from the edge of the box.

Those hopes soon faded when Fleetwood scored three goals for good late in the half. Camps started the attack with a clever roulette for Mayor. Burns played a ball over the defense behind him, where he lifted the ball over Cooper before running off in celebration.

In a triple half-time move for Argyle, Jerome Opoku, Conor Grant and Dom Telford made way for Niall Canavan, Ryan Hardie and Luke Jephcott.

However, it was similar in the second half when Fleetwood stayed in the flow state.

Mulgrew headed in 54. Minute in Fleetwood’s fourth. A free kick on the left, substituted by Morris, hit the center-back in the six-yard penalty area.

It seemed like Camps had missed his opportunity to grab himself a second after playing one-on-one in the penalty area but aiming his shot on the wrong side of the post.

He soon corrected this, collecting Moore’s lackluster clearance at the edge of the box before firing a shot into the top of the net – bringing Fleetwood’s total to five.

Jephcott managed to limit the damage to Argyle’s goal difference late in the game. Frank Nouble’s first cross came from the Wales Under-21 international who shot home.

Canavan gave the pilgrims more headaches and received a second yellow in stoppage time for a poor challenge against striker Ched Evans.

Argyle has yet to win away in the league and only collects two points on the road.

The last away win for the Pilgrims came in February with a winner in the 92. Minute against Salford City.

This will no doubt be frustrating for Lowe and the team, who look different today than they did against Portsmouth five days ago.

Many of today’s goals are due to individual mistakes, similar to the performances at the start of the season.

The defense was easily hit by balls and could not remove the danger when asked to.

With strong defensive performances against Portsmouth, Charlton Athletic and Doncaster Rovers, Argyle seemed to have said goodbye to their defensive problems.

The attacking midfielder was highlighted as a watcher in match preview after scoring a brace in the last game against Bristol Rovers and he didn’t disappoint – he did it again today.

He was arguably the best player on the pitch and remained untouchable for most of the game.

Morris is notorious for members of the Green Army, so it was only fitting that he performed well.

Morris scored both Fleetwood goals in the second half and looked a threat every time he was on the ball. The winger also had the misfortune of not scoring a goal in the first half.
