M Dobbin, of Mildenhall, was attacked by a group of hooligans after watching his side, Cambridge United, play at Southend United on March 21, 2015

He fought for his life after a 90 second stroke and suffered permanent brain damage

M’s wife Dobbin, Nicole, confirmed her death on Facebook this afternoon and paid tribute to her husband

« I am writing this post heartbroken, but my poor gentle giant Simon passed away this morning at home, » said Ms Dobbin

« It is with heavy hearts that Cambridge United can confirm that we received the terrible news that Simon Dobbin sadly passed away at his home this morning, » they said in a Tweet

M Dobbin needed 24 hour care and could only be fed through a tube

A total of 12 men were jailed in July 2017 for the attack on Mr. Dobbin, but the last remaining prisoner was released on February 5 this year

Ms Dobbin met with Justice Secretary Robert Buckland in February to discuss ‘Simon’s Law’ – which would require violent offenders to make payments to the NHS for the rest of their lives

Nick Knowles and the BBC’s DIY SOS team visited Dobbin’s house in November 2017 to make improvements

The works included a bedroom, physiotherapy area, powder room and social area, with downstairs access and exterior access for M Dobbin in his wheelchair
