We discovered some differences between the television adaptation and the source novel by Philip Pullman

The first season of his book’s Dark Matter attracted praise for all sorts of reasons – one of the most acclaimed aspects of the show was how true to the spirit of Philip Pullman’s novels captured the sense of admiration far more than the previous 2007 movie version.

That doesn’t mean there were no changes in the series – Will Parry was introduced early, while some parts of the narration were expanded or slightly changed – but for the most part, it was very true for the books

The good news for fans before the second series is that this is the case again, with the Pullman sequel The Subtle Knife largely unchanged, except for a few minor changes

« There is no kind of major shock [like Will appearing in the first series] But there is a series of small shocks that will likely challenge the foundations in a more interesting way, ”writer Jack Thorne told RadioTimescom and the other press when asked about the changes

« Our goal is always how we can tell Philip’s story better. We are not trying to do anything different from books We are just trying to feed the TV language in these books

« So we sometimes turn away and do different things – but we always go back to the text and say how it helps us tell his story better »

We keep track of all those subtle changes as the series progresses, so read on to find out what changes were made on an episode-by-episode basis

Possibly the biggest change made in the opening sections of The Subtle Knife relates to Boyle Barry (Prince Wilson) in the book Will, introduced in Chapter 1, as it didn’t appear in Northern Lights, but of course, that’s different in the series: it’s listed The first parts of Will’s story are already in the first series, so there’s no need for them to be repeated in the second series premiere.

Instead, we see Will and Lyra’s first encounter from Lyra’s perspective, as we watch her wander through some jungle terrain and hide in a cave before arriving at Cittàgazze, where Will surprised her in a store and the two were competing for a while

The only other noteworthy change in Will and Lyra’s story relates to their meeting with the local Citagazze children. In the book, they meet a boy and girl named Paulo and Angelica, but in the series there are two girls – Paolo takes her place

Cast Director Kahleen Crawford explained the reasons behind this specific change on RadioTimescom, saying it was a result of the casting

She explained, “We just had the fortunes embarrassment in the casting process.” And when it came down to that, we had some really great little brothers playing Paulo – but in the end we had these two girls Ella and Bella The two were very strong in their performance, if I remember correctly, basically it was decided that their parts should be bigger, and there would be more for them to do on screen  »

A key story in the opening episode features a witch being tortured to gain information by Mrs. Coulter and Magisterium, and while a similar scene occurs in the novel, a number of changes have been made

In the book, the scene takes place on a ship rather than a submarine while Mrs. Coulter’s method of torture is also an invention of the show and then there is the little method for the identity of the witch – her name is not mentioned in the book, but referred to as Katya in the series

However, the biggest change here is related to the rescue mission of other witches in The Subtle Knife, Serafina Pikala was in hiding throughout the torture scene before Yambi summoned Akka (the goddess who comes to the witch before she dies) and kills the witch in action. Mercy

In the series, this happens very differently: Rota Skady rescues the witch against Serafina’s orders, and fights her way through several Magisterium officials in the process Rota Skady doesn’t appear in the novel, but she’s got an expanded role here

Explained by Jack Thorne and the other changes made to the stories of witches in the series, he credited some of the new writers on the team in the series – including Francesca Gardiner, Sarah Quinterell, and Namsei Khan – who he said had pushed him to do more.

“They really brought a range and challenged us in a number of different ways,” he told RadioTimes.com and the other press, “Witches were a thing where the book room said the direction I wanted to take them wasn’t deep enough and they took them, and I love what will come out as a result. Absolutely true «

As was the case in the first series, the story surrounding the educational power of the novel is expanded in this episode, we witness an encounter between Magisterium characters including Father McPhail, Cardinal Sturrock, and Mrs. Coulter, alluding to the split – all new to the series. In fact, despite having appeared in both series so far, Father McPhail didn’t actually appear in a book until The Amber Spyglass, the last novel in the trilogy.

Jack Thorne has also spoken in detail about why he decided to focus more on Magisterium on the show. He said, “It’s hard to talk about Because something is going on in the third series, as we’ve seen in our heads, which is that Father McPhail is doing something extraordinary, and very desperate.

“And this question has always piqued our interest. It was something we always wanted so we introduced him to the first series and proved him as a very strong member of the Education Authority – a dependable person in the Education Authority.

« And through the second series we see him turn into a leader, and we see him make moral decisions that make him a person and we all build for that moment in Season Three as he steps on the edge into something totally dark »
