More than 250,000 people around the world watched the Fenwick unfolding its winds in the Willows themed Christmas window
The downtown Newcastle store unveiled its display by default via Facebook Live last night, due to the coronavirus lockdown, and viewers watched the show from as far away as Australia, America, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Canada and across Europe to watch
The event regularly draws a crowd of 2,000 on Northumberland Street, and Last Night’s movie featured a host of festive surprises including a dancing elves, Santa himself on the rooftop of Fenwick’s store, and a nostalgic look back through the extensive Fenwick Christmas Window Archive
Kieran McBride, manager of Fenwick Newcastle, said last night, “Fenwick has created a magic window for Christmas every year here in Newcastle for nearly fifty years.
“This year, it was really important that we were able to reveal the Christmas window in a safe way
Tonight, we were thrilled to see over a quarter of a million viewers watching the unveiling of « Wind in the Willows Story » from around the world.
« We would like to give special thanks to Newcastle City Council, with whom we have worked closely to ensure we continue to bring the joy of Fenwick’s birthday to society and beyond this year. »
“We ask everyone to follow the latest instructions and not take a private trip to view the window while the current instructions remain in place
« The window will be in place throughout the holiday season and into January, so there is plenty of time for people to see it safely in the coming weeks. »
This year’s window theme « A Wind in the Willows Story » is a festively reimagined presentation of the popular and beloved classic children’s story, The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Graham
Keeping true to the original themes of friendship and adventure, it’s the famous animal characters Mole, Rat, Badger and Toad from the classic children’s book and take the audience on an exciting festive journey with Toad and Santa as they work together to save Christmas
The story begins at Mole’s home with a visit to his cousin Winston, who arrives at The Burrows in his traditional truck Fenwick, carrying Christmas gifts and cheerful stories to tell around a warm warm bonfire
After enjoying the warmth of winter with his old friend Rat on his boat, Mole, Winston, and Rat set out on a visit to Wildwood to share some festive joy with Badger.
But disaster struck and Santa needs help to deliver all the Christmas gifts in his bag
Comes with Todd on the Fenwick Express as he hopes to borrow a Fenwick truck on the Mole End to help save Christmas.
Santa Claus makes the Fenwick Truck fly, and with the help of Toad, magically delivers Christmas gifts to all the sleeping girls and boys during the night
Christmas Day has arrived, the table is set, Mall, Winston, Rat, Badger and Toad have gathered for a festive banquet at Toad Hall
With « Hip Hop Hooray », all animal friends cheer Toad for helping her save this Christmas
Finally, the story of A Wind in the Willows ends with Santa giving Toad a special gift from Fenwick Thank you for the good work done
In line with the latest coronavirus guidance, Fenwick has asked people not to take a special trip to see the window, which will remain available until January.
Enhanced safety measures have been in place on Northumberland Street throughout the Christmas period
