World News – GB – Labor Party calls for investigation of Robert Jenrick into funding for his own constituency

The Labor Party demanded a high-level investigation of the Communities Secretary into how government funding was allocated to his constituency rather than others in the UK

Robert Jenrick said he and a junior minister approved payments to towns in their respective constituencies from a government fund intended for disadvantaged areas, with his constituency of Newark selected for £ 25million in funding sterling

The revelations follow a Times report alleging Jenrick helped select Newark for the award, which the Communities Secretary has vehemently denied

On Sunday, Jenrick insisted that there was a « solid and fair » methodology behind the government’s Towns Fund and dismissed claims he was involved in the selection of Newark as being « totally unfounded »

But Ghost Communities Secretary Steve Reed has written to the Civil Service Chief to demand a Cabinet Office investigation into Jenrick, regarding how the recipients of the Multi-Billion Pound Cities Fund were chosen

Jenrick told Sky’s Ridge on Sunday: “My department officials have made it clear that we have chosen the cities for our £ 3Fund of 6 billion cities on a solid and fair methodology, accessible to all «

When asked if he would face MPs in the House of Commons to defend the situation, he added: “We have answered all questions and (are) happy to answer any that may occur But there is really nothing to see here «

But later, the Communities Secretary couldn’t deny that he and Minister Jake Berry had approved cities in their respective constituencies to receive government funding allocations

Jenrick told the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show: « If the question you are coming to is whether I am involved in selecting my own community, absolutely not

« Ministers do not get involved in their own constituencies This decision was made by another minister in my ministry »

When it was pointed out that a town in the riding of Berry had also received money from the fund, Jenrick confirmed that he was the person who gave the green light to the decision.

He continued, « Andrew (Marr), with respect, that’s perfectly normal Ministers don’t get involved in decision-making for their own constituencies, but neither should their constituencies fall victim to the fact. that they happen to be (represented by) a minister

Earlier this year, Jenrick rejected calls for his resignation after ensuring that a controversial subdivision was agreed upon before the introduction of a new levy that would have cost his backer millions
