Liverpool U18s recorded a fourth consecutive league victory, beating Newcastle United 4-1 at the Academy on Saturday afternoon
Max Woltman put the young Reds ahead in the middle of the first half with a well-taken finish and Tyler Morton then celebrated his 18th birthday with a strike of the same lineup over 29 minutes
Morton won his second and third of the hosts early in the second period and another great day of work for Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s side was sealed by Layton Stewart’s excellent shot, with the Lucas De Bolle’s late effort a consolation for the away team
The prolific Stewart had two first goals in Kirkby and was stopped at the last moment on two separate occasions, but those chances set the tone for an open, end-to-end contest
James Balagizi was the architect of the occasion, showing agility, pace and vigilance as he carried the ball through midfield before dismissing it, but the eventual low shot was stopped by Newcastle goalkeeper
Unfazed, visitors quickly forged a series of their own openings and Liverpool’s woodwork was shaken, to say the least, in 13 minutes
From a clear turn, De Bolle hit a 20-meter surge that smacked the crossbar and bounced back
Melkamu Frauendorf might have given the home side the advantage soon after, only for the No11 to possibly be taken by surprise when Dominic Corness’ deep corner landed him in the middle and he took pushed the ball away
Lee Jonas’ precise and inviting shot in the left channel was picked up by Woltman and the latter clinically guided a finish through the keeper and inside the opposite post
Frauendorf shot too close to Oliver Marshall in Newcastle’s goal when Stewart won possession at the top of the pitch and Woltman ran the run ahead of his teammate in the box
A soft move created it, starting with Jarell Quansah taking the ball out of the defense, then with key passes from Balagizi and Woltman to allow Morton to finish in the lower right corner.
Liverpool quickly regained their momentum as the teams emerged for the second half and within six minutes of the restart he was 3-0
Frauendorf called for help with neat footwork on the left sideline and his perfect cut into the six-yard box was hit close by Morton
Marshall extended Stewart’s wait for a goal when the two went head-to-head and Corness wasn’t too wide with a free kick curling from the edge of the box
The Reds demanded leave from Quansah to preserve their clean sheet as the U18 Premier League North game entered its final half hour
Stewart then added his name to the scoresheet when Isaac Mabaya made progress down the right side and his withdrawal eventually fell to Liverpool Non9, who produced an exquisite, tilted workout in the far corner
Newcastle fought back in the finals, however, with De Bolle beating Jakub Ojrzynski with four minutes left, but the points were already in the sack for the hosts
