The guard sergeant shot dead in a police station was a former professional rugby player who was about to retire

Sergeant Matiu Ratana, 54, known as Matt, went straight into duty after coaching his local rugby team, a friend said as he laid flowers outside the venue on duty where the officer was assassinated

Sergeant Ratana came to Britain in 1989 to play rugby for the London Irish and later for several clubs in West London before moving to the South Coast and starting his coaching career, according to an online profile

Amanda Tessier, a friend whose sister Sue Bushby has had a relationship with Sergeant Ratana for four years, described him as « a very nice big bear »
