I WELCOME the announcement that new legislation that requires all homes in Scotland to have smoke and carbon monoxide alarms interconnected will be postponed until February 2022, especially given the financial pressures people may face due to Covid-19

The Scottish government has confirmed it will ask Parliament to approve a 12-month deadline to complete this important security work I know this bill and a leaflet campaign associated with it alarmed voters, and I wanted to make sure that these concerns were heard Covid-19 has had a profound impact on us all and left much worse financially or redundant This can make it difficult for people to afford the cost of installing new alarms and we should definitely consider easing the additional financial pressures at this time which is why I am very happy with this expected delay.

Fire safety remains a priority, and I will continue to ensure that people have the support, information and advice they need to make changes before the new standards come into effect in February 2022.

The Prime Minister announced a new five-level strategic framework for Scotland which will come into place on November 2 This includes information on items such as health, education, hospitality, shopping, travel, leisure and close contact services It also includes information for those who previously protected I encourage all my constituents to check out the material available on the Scottish Government website at govScotland

I am glad the Scottish government voted to extend free school meals during the Christmas and Easter holidays This policy will help over 1,140 children across East Lothian during the school holidays We know this year has created some unique challenges for many families, and it is important that we do all we can to support them No child deserves to go hungry and I am happy that Scotland maintains a policy to alleviate the fight against child poverty
