Serie A have announced that Juventus won a 3-0 victory over Napoli after the visitors failed to travel to Turin for a game scheduled for October 4
In addition, Napoli were penalized with a one point deduction for not showing up to the match at the Allianz Stadium
Napoli were barred from going to the game by local health authorities after two players, Piotr Zielinski and Eljif Elmas, tested positive for Covid-19 with a member of club staff
Although Napoli did not travel, Juventus made it to the game, which was officially called off 45 minutes after the referee kicked off
Gennaro Gattuso’s side had hoped the match would be postponed, but a Serie A judge ruled that « force majeure », the legal term for an extraordinary event or circumstance beyond a party’s control, did not exist in this case
« In the opinion of this sports judge, the case of force majeure has not been proven », reads a press release
The judge went on to say that Napoli’s inability to travel to Turin was only evident on match day, but the club had already decided in the days leading up to the game that they would not surrender in Turin
Napoli have indicated that they will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, then to CONI, Italy’s highest sports authority
After the match was postponed, Juve president Andrea Agnelli said he believes his side should take the win
« The president of Naples [Aurelio] De Laurentiis sent me a message and I replied that [we], as always, respect the rules, » Agnelli said
« He wanted to postpone the game, but we have regulations that tell us how to proceed Every industry has their rules and we have to respect them I don’t think the ASL [local health authority] in Naples can intervene if the protocol FIGC, which refers to the government circular, is not respected at some point If the protocol changes, we will respect it again «
With the result, Juventus move to fourth place in the table while Napoli fell to eighth
