Shishkin did an excellent jumping round to get his chase off to a successful start at Kempton.
Nicky Henderson’s 2020 Sky Bet Supreme Novices hurdler led off the second fence in Racing TV Beginners’ Chase and saw no other rival.
Nico De Boinville asked him to stretch the straight and a few more flowing jumps carried the favorites 1-6 23 lengths ahead of Mick Pastor.
« I think you have to praise him because it really was 10 out of 10, » said Henderson.
« He’s proven that he can do it both ways, as if he wants to be extravagant, then he has tons of leeway – he got a bit flashy at times – but until the last it wasn’t really a step at all he was nimble on his feet and gone.
« It was a good school for him and it’s a good route for him – there are no traps here. It’s a nice place to start.
« You’re just praying that sometimes he doesn’t go too long and try to do something stupid to avoid trouble.
« He was very good from day one, we didn’t train him much at all. «
Betfair reduced Shishkin’s chances of winning the Sporting Life Arkle at Cheltenham Festival in March to 7-4 (from 5-2).
Henderson nominated the Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase, held in Kempton over Christmas, as the six-year-old’s next destination.
The coach won the 2016 race with the top two-mile Altior in a season in which he ended his youth campaign for beginners unbeaten.
