Jose Mourinho claimed Carlos Vinicius needs to learn to throw his weight around to make an impression with Tottenham in the Premier League after impressing in the Europa League.
Vinicius scored two goals in Tottenham’s 4-0 loss to Ludogorets in Europa League Group J on Thursday to leave Spurs within one point of reaching the knockout stage.
The brace was Vinicius’ first goal for Tottenham since signing a London loan deal with Portuguese giant Benfica in October.
Vinicius has contributed to five goals (two goals and three assists) in four Europa League games for Spurs this season.
At a post-game media conference, however, head coach Mourinho told Vinicius he needed to learn to deal with the physicality of the Premier League, which will be a success in England.
« He doesn’t play much, especially in the Premier League, but he helped us win the game in West Bromwich Albion and in the Europa League he’s doing fine and he’s adapting, » said Mourinho.
« It was good that he scored important goals. In the second half he supports Lucas Moura with his goal.
« He’s a big boy, a strong boy and needs to be more physical in the Premier League, but I’m happy.
« It’s good for the team to have that because, for example, last season when Harry Kane needed a break – we couldn’t and because Vinicius is here the squad is much more even. «
Vinicius’ second goal was largely due to a selfless game by Dele Alli, who was on the verge of Tottenham’s impressive run this season.
« The second is 75 percent Dele Alli’s target, » added Mourinho. « This is the team. He tried to score but it was an easy target for Vinicius. A team player does that. No risk and 2-0. I’m not surprised he did that. «
Tottenham have won five straight games in all competitions under Mauricio Pochettino (a run of six) for the first time since November 2018, compared with three straight clean sheets for the first time since April 2019.
Spurs is joining Mourinho’s former club, Chelsea, on Sunday but claimed a trip to Stamford Bridge was about the three points, not the sentimentality of the occasion.
He told BT Sport: « Every game is every game, in the Premier League I don’t make any difference because you can win or lose points in every game. We don’t look at the table, but at matches. «
