St Mirren paid tribute to Buddies loyalists by renaming their pitch after the club’s independent supporters association

As the club continue to move towards majority fan ownership next year, the Saints have ceded the naming rights to their stadium to the St Mirren Independent Supporters Association

This will see the pitch, formerly known as Simple Digital Arena and St Mirren Park, renamed SMISA Stadium for the remainder of the campaign

Tonight’s clash with Dundee United will be St Mirren’s first in the newly renamed pitch

SMISA President George Adam MSP said: “Our goal has always been the same: to see St Mirren remain forever at the heart of the Paisley community and in the hands of those who care most What better way to mark club ownership in the hands of fans than to put their name above the door?

« When we started the journey to fan ownership five years ago, we didn’t expect to be in this position so soon – but the incredible commitment of our members made it possible. We are delighted that the club’s board of directors has chosen to recognize SMISA members in this way «

St Mirren chairman Gordon Scott added: “I’ve always wanted to know that I hand over ownership of the club to the fans when the time comes, and with the setup we now have in place, we believe the time will to be in summer

« The rest of the board and I are delighted to be able to recognize the commitment of SMISA members over the past five years to making this all possible

« Unfortunately our fans cannot be in the stadium at the moment, but we hope that the name of SMISA on the pitch for the remainder of the season shows how much we value them as a life force and a future of the club »
