World news – Goodwin hails « ripe » ???? Dee’s defense from the clash of the saints

Simon Goodwin says his squad's mature defense is now the foundation of the team ahead of a crunch clash with St. Kilda.

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin has hailed his back six as the foundation of his team after the Demons. first opening win since 2017.

Steven May, Jake Lever and Adam Tomlinson were defensive bans for the Demons in their 22-point win over Fremantle Dockers at the MCG on Saturday. ??? ripe Part of the team.

The demons ???? Hopes for the final stand before the first real test in round two when they face St. Kilda. Goodwin said a successful start to the season gave his team a good chance to build something special in 2021.

« It’s been a while since our supporters and players get on the forefoot important. » Said Goodwin.

It’s only been a week, last year we were 1-3 [win-loss] and were under a lot of pressure as a football club. This gives us a chance to build and we have a big game against the Saints next week. It’s good to get off to a good start, but there is still a lot to be done.

May showed his best in the first half of Saturday’s clash by stopping Fremantle attacks while pushing forward to create scoring opportunities while Lever and Tomlinson held up the Dockers solidly.

« We’ve talked a lot about solidarity as a footy club, and when May, Lever and Adam Tomlinson play a good piece of footy together, it makes a big difference to your team .  » Goodwin said.

You can see that togetherness in their ability to catch the ball, be really strong in competition, and work well together.

« There’s no coincidence why they play well and they are probably our most mature Area on the floor and that helps us be more aggressive in other areas of the game. «

The Demons could have scored more goals on the board with a little more poise and more consistent execution, but Goodwin said it was time for his team, tweaking those areas, and stable defense enabled them to be more aggressive on the field.

« There are always areas of the game that you can improve and that’s one of them, » Goodwin said about his attack in which Tom McDonald, Christian Petracca and Bayley Fritsch scored two goals each.

There is no doubt that this is one of them, our ability to finish and take off in our front 50 yards « But it was exactly on the other side of the floor, it wasn’t our set-shots or our shot on goal, it was the time when our handball or our execution was just a little off. » Other times it was excellent.

More importantly, the more we went in, the more times we hit. It was really gratifying to get 25 shots on goal against a really tough defender. “????

The Dockers made their sales but also felt heavy hearts after defender Alex Pearce injured his knee with repeated ankle injuries in his first second leg in 659 days.

Dockers coach Justin Longmuir said Pearce would likely be out for a month or more while defender Joel Hambling injured his ankle late and will be touch and go for the next round.

He’s been gone so long and will be injured in the first game. It’s not good for his well being and feelings, but he’s in a better mood now. We will get around him and I know he will do the job. “????
