Grey’s Anatomy Midseason Premiere Recap: The afterlife is a beach for [spoilers]
Grey’s Anatomy ‘Casualty’ finds the bright side of a dark twist – and what made a polarizing romance fail
As soon as Grey’s Anatomy says goodbye to a regular series, she is calling back an old friend.
Sarah Drew, the Dr. April Kepner, who played in ABC’s long-running medical drama, will repeat the role in a guest appearance later this season, reports our sister site Deadline. No details yet on what will bring her back to Gray Sloan or when it might air, but some familiar faces have made their way back to Grey’s via beach dream sequences this season, including Patrick Dempsey as Derek « McDreamy » Shepherd and T.R. Knight as George O’Malley. (Unlike these two, Drew’s character April is still alive, so she can actually appear in the flesh.)
Drew’s return comes after a heartbreak for Grey’s fans. The show kills Giacomo Gianniotti’s character Andrew DeLuca in this week’s episode. (Click here for our updated ranking of the saddest Grey’s Anatomy deaths of all time.)
Drew left Grey’s in 2018 after nine years with colleague Jessica Capshaw, Arizona. In Drew’s last episode, April and boyfriend Matthew married in an impromptu ceremony. She then resigned from the hospital to provide medical care to the homeless in Seattle. She and her ex-husband Jackson (played by Jesse Williams) continue to share custody of their daughter Harriet.
Since leaving Grey’s, Drew has starred in two pilots for CBS – a reboot of Cagney & Lacey and The Republic of Sarah – but neither made it onto the series. She will also play a recurring role in the upcoming freeform series Cruel Summer.
