Overwolf, a platform that allows developers to create, distribute, and monetize in-game apps, has raised $ 52.5 million, led by Griffin Gaming Partners and Insight Partners.

The company, which is also announcing the launch of a new user-generated content platform, has received additional funding from Ubisoft, Warner Music Group, former Quibi CEO Meg Whitman, and Gen.G co-founder Kevin Chou.

« Much like how developers use Unity to create a game, we see Overwolf as the framework for everything UGC has to do with games, » said Nick Tuosto, Griffin Gaming co-founder and LionTree general manager. « Overwolf provides one of the only monetization opportunities for thousands of developers. This in turn leads to increased publisher engagement and more content for gamers. Services like Overwolf are creating the foundation for a new generation of users in the industry -generated content, and we’re excited to be to invest in the leading company to advance this area. «

Insight Managing Director Teddie Wardi added, « We have followed UGC for many years in gaming and believe that Overwolf has established itself as a leader in this category. AAA game studios want to allow developers to build themselves and express themselves as Overwolf is Platform positioned to make this possible by ensuring that creators are recognized for their contributions and creations can be easily incorporated into games. Overwolf has proven to be a strong advocate of the creative community and we look forward to seeing them scale out in 2021 to help. «

Overwolf from Tel Aviv works with around 30,000 developers and has 18 million active users per month. In 2020, the company acquired CurseForge, a repository for modifications – or « mods » – for video games such as Warcraft and Minecraft from Twitch. The company is now launching CurseForge Core to help users discover and install mods in-game across platforms and storefronts.

« We are at a new turning point for user-generated content and the strong growth in gaming is largely in the hands of in-game developers, » a term we coined to denote this new generation of in- Categorize game app creators and mod authors, « said Co-Founder and CEO Uri Marchand. « The more content and customizability a game has, the more likely a gamer will continue to experience its content, thereby extending the life of the game and creating more value in the long run for game developers and publishers. »

He continued, « By offering CurseForge Core, we are accelerating the community-created content movement by allowing publishers to easily and seamlessly integrate mods into their existing and new games. We are confident that the Overwolf Platform will lay the foundation for a new era in AAA game creation. «

The company will use its new round of funding to continue providing developer services and opportunities to invest in and with the in-game developer community.

Warner Music sees an opportunity to invest as the in-game music experience increases. « At Warner Music Group, we are constantly experimenting and innovating to find new ways to serve our artists and music fans around the world, » said Oana Ruxandra, executive vice president of business development and chief digital officer for the record label. « We’re excited to invest in a like-minded company like Overwolf that pushes the boundaries of what is possible in gaming, and look forward to exploring more ways our worlds can intersect. »
