The American racing season traditionally starts with the Rolex 24 in Daytona, but IMSA starts a week earlier with a qualifying race.

Traditionally, American racing starts every year with a 24-hour race in Daytona. This is a very strange year, however, and IMSA is starting a new tradition: a 100-minute qualifying race begins a week earlier before the 24-hour classic.

This event, the Pole Award 100, mirrors the qualifying format for two races for the Daytona 500, however, serves a different purpose here: to ensure teams competing in the race this coming weekend don’t use the traditional Roar Before the 24 test to convince race organizers that their car is slower than it and is earning some extra current account breaks before the main event. IMSA and its predecessors have made some major balancing errors in the past, but if the cars are forced to run around something of value, they are theoretically deprived of the ability to do so.

The race for pole, the first look at a Rolex 24 five-class field led by new DPi submissions from IndyCar teams and former Grand-Am stalwarts Chip Ganassi Racing and Meyer Shank Racing , will take place tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on the NBC Sports app. The race will be taped two and a half hours later on the outgoing NBC Sports Network.

The entire Rolex 24 in Daytona will be broadcast live on NBC and NBC Sports Network next weekend.
