World news – In the 250th assault game, Bromwich takes on the coach who discovered him

Jesse Bromwich will play his 250th game for the Storm on Thursday night and opposing coach Brad Arthur was the man who discovered him while working as a development coach for the Storm.

Years ago, Craig Bellamy hired Brad Arthur as Melbourne Storm’s first development coach and Arthur again gave an unknown striker Jesse Bromwich a chance.

Club legend has it that Bromwich was completely off the NRL radar and his Brother Kenny, who was a junior Storm player, visited.

Jesse, who had played in Orange, New South Wales, was watching practice when Arthur saw him on the sidelines and asked if he would like to join before he was so impressed that he gave Bromwich a game in the team’s U20 selection this weekend.

On Thursday evening, Bromwich will lead the storm and play his 250th game. He will do this with Arthur, who is now Parramatta Eels’ coach, who leads the opposition. « Kenny was here and I think Jesse came down from Orange over the weekend and watched Kenny train, » said Bellamy.

« Brad saw him on the sidelines, I don’t know if he just picked him or if he missed the boys for training, but he did us a big favor, so thank you Brad. »

Bromwich had to be pushed to take on more of a leadership role by its coaches and executives like Cameron Smith and Billy Slater. But he has emerged as a role model for the club’s forward package and, along with Lock Dale, has replaced Finucane Smith as co-captain for 2021.

Bellamy was also impressed with the way Bromwich took over the captaincy and continued his performance. </ "I like what I saw from Jesse our preseason," said Bellamy. "I think he took it up a bit and he's only the sixth man in our club to play 250. It's a great honor in itself."

« Playing 250 is a wonderful achievement and with that The way he’s played it just shows the pro he is. «

Bromwich is more focused on going up against the mighty pack of eels on Thursday night, but he admits he’s proud to be a part Smith, Slater, Cooper Cronk, Ryan Hoffman and Matt Geyer playing 250 Storm games.

« It hasn’t really hit me, but my family reminded me. I have three sons and they are old now enough to see what’s going on and they’re pretty excited about it, « said Bromwich.

» They want to come to Sydney for the game. I’m just very grateful to Craig and Frank for giving me the opportunity to play here and all the success that comes with it. It’s just a number, but I’m just grateful for it. «

The Bromwich family will be staying in Melbourne this week as it is a school night.

Bromwich passed an early test as captain during Thursday night’s 26:18 win against South Sydney when he decided that Challenge his captain not to use his brother Kenny in the first half, but to really challenge it in the 70th minute, when it was wrongly determined that the storm had knocked.

« I knew I shouldn’t do that » Bromwich joked about why he hadn’t challenged his brother’s sentence.

« He was pretty sure about [teammate Justin Olam] but it [the captain’s challenge] was the last thing I thought about when it came to this captain’s stuff went. But he was pretty sure and I thought if we got it right it would have a huge impact on whether we win the game or not. I’m glad that worked out. «
