World news – « India with Uttarakhand, » says PM as Glacier Break Damagers Power Plant

A glacier eruption in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand triggered an avalanche and massive flooding along the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers on Sunday morning, which forced the emergency evacuation of thousands from the surrounding areas and damaged homes and the nearby Rishiganga power station. </ About 100 to 150 people could have been killed in the flash flood, Uttarakhand chief secretary Om Prakash told the ANI news agency. Authorities fearing hundreds more could still get stuck.

Five NDRF teams (one from Dehradun and four from Delhi) and two ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) were used for search and rescue.

Further NDRF teams are being mobilized. The director general of the NDRF, SN Pradhan, told the PTI news agency: « We are working on moving three to four more teams from the Hindon IAF base near Delhi. »

Over 150 workers in the flood affected Energy project in Rishiganga are missing, SDRF DIG Ridhim Aggarwal told PTI. « Representatives from the energy project have told me that they are unable to contact around 150 of their workers at the project site, » she said.

Authorities also fear the safety of workers involved in ongoing road and rail projects area.

A warning has been issued for all downstream counties, and people from Vishnuprayag, Joshimath, Karnprayag, Rudraprayag, Rishikesh and Haridwar have been warned not to visit river banks.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Assam is about to run for the assembly elections, said he is reviewing the situation and has spoken to Prime Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat and other top officials.

I have spoken to high-level authorities and information about the NDRF’s operation, Rett The Prime Minister tweeted. Mr Rawat asked people not to panic or spread rumors and emphasize that the county, police and civil protection teams are dealing with the situation.
