Vasco: NorthEast United FC secured a place in the playoffs at Tilak Maidan on Friday with a 2-0 win over Kerala Blasters.

The Highlanders only needed one point to secure their second playoffs qualify, and showed no sign of stopping as they attacked from the first whistle. They scored both goals in the first half through Suhair Vadakkepeedika (34th) and Lalengmawia (45th).

Khalid Jamil also made history by becoming the first Indian to coach three or more league games and lead a team to the playoffs.

Jamil set up an unchanged XI from the previous game, while Kerala Blasters had a change, with Sandeep Singh Subha Ghosh being preferred.

The Highlanders had a great opportunity shortly after the start. Luis Machado sent a delivery in the box, which was sent back directly to him. His cross from the right hit Dylan Fox, but he shot wide.

At the other end, it was Kerala who failed to make progress in the game. Bakary Kone managed to dodge his marker and hit the end of a corner from Jessel Carneiro, but his header missed the target.

While NorthEast were clearly the better side in the first session, the Kerala Blasters had their chances. But the defense of the highlands was strong. NorthEast took the lead in the 34th minute.

Khassa Camara slipped into a through pass that Kone could not handle . Suhair Vadakkepeedika stepped into the ball and passed Sandeep Singh before rounding off an advancing albino Gomes to bring his side forward.

Jamil’s men built their lead in an amazing strike just before the breather Lalengmawia from. Fox set up Lalengmawia, whose well-hit Long Ranger crashed into the net from the bottom of the bar. Jamil’s enthusiastic look at the sidelines showed how well the goal was.

Kerala Blasters had a better start to the second session. They created opportunities through Rahul KP and Gary Hooper, but one end escaped them.

At the other end, Gomes was forced to a beautiful save as Machado showed his brilliance and tried his luck at the gate as he entered the penalty area.

Despite their chances, NEUFC could not achieve their third place. Her best chance came when Federico Gallego played a weighted pass against Brown who managed to dodge Gomes. However, his shot from a narrow angle found the side net.
