ISL is making headlines for all the wrong reasons, as East Bengal’s English star coach Robbie Fowler after a game against FC Goa with a minimum ban of five games and a fine of 6 rupees for one alleged racist remark against referees.

After East Bengal’s 1-1 draw with 10-man Goa FC in Margaon on January 29th, Fowler was frustrated and allegedly said the referee was either « against English or against East Bengal « .

Video footage of the Englishman who made the comment could not be rated as it was deleted from all platforms.

» The match commissioner took note of the incident and reported the matter to the Disciplinary Committee who will make the decision after hearing Fowler’s version on Wednesday night, « an ISL official told PTI on Tuesday.

» If he is found guilty he is liable for a five-game ban and a fine of 6 rupees, « he added.

The Disciplinary Committee of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) will make a decision on Wednesday after videoconferencing Fowler’s version

The Liverpool Legend will be charged under Article 59.1 (a) of the AIFF Disciplinary Act, which states: « Anyone who harms the dignity of any person or group of people through contemptuous, discriminatory or defamatory words or actions relating to race, Skin color, language, religion or origin will be banned for at least five games.

« In addition, a stadium ban and a fine of at least Rs 3,00,000 will be imposed. If the offender is a civil servant, the fine must be at least Rs 6,00,000. « The standard of arbitration has often been an issue in the ISL.

Fowler had expressed his displeasure at the way umpires were voiced more than once in this first edition of the league.

The 45-year-old had noticed that the umpires might need a little help after his team received at least two penalties in a 2-0 loss to NorthEast United FC in December.

Then, after a goalless draw with Chennaiyin FC in January, he called the referee « disgraceful » and said , he « fights every single game with the referees and it’s an absolute joke ».

Fowler was also suspended for one game after receiving his second warning of the season that forced him to play against Bengaluru FC to be missed on January 9th. However, Danny Fox was allowed to play in this game after the Disciplinary Committee received a red card following a complaint from SCEB against the referee.

East Bengal is in its first ISL season and is currently in tenth place with six games remaining, ahead of Odisha FC.
