YES, President of Programming and Production, John Filippelli got Ken Singleton 3-3 out of retirement, but Filippelli sounded like it was going to be.
Singleton, a YES original, will be this year only do a handful of series. The plan is to give Singleton, 73, the real goodbye by calling the Yankees’ final series against Tampa in October.
This time around, it really sounds like this is the final season for Singleton, a gentleman of the game .
The opening day is always about hope. For baseball on TV in 2021, this is no different.
With Filippelli projecting this season onto the screen, there is optimism that things will look even better at the All-Star game.
On YES and SNY will start the season similar to last season due to the pandemic. Broadcasters won’t travel to street games at the start of the season, but at some point this may change. It could be a slow build.
« We’re basically going to duplicate what we did last year, » said Curt Gowdy Jr., Executive Producer of SNY.
If the vaccines take hold and the effects of the If the COVID-19 potential subsides, the broadcasters could take to the streets for at least some games. Until the next opening day, it is possible that the announcers from Yankees and Mets will be out all day.
A small improvement at the beginning of the year is that the side reporters Steve Gelbs and Meredith Marakovits are allowed to stay outside the home bunkers in the camera shafts.
The way broadcasts are sent has changed. Pre-Pandemic, YES and SNY and all networks produced their own shows at home and on the go.
For example, when the Yankees are in Baltimore, YES takes the Orioles food. They have their own camera for all games, but basically it’s what’s known as the « world feed » that’s supposed to be neutral.
For larger games, both YES and SNY are planning an additional camera for two Add people on the street so that both shelters can be covered on their own.
The TV rosters in the main studio of YES, consisting of Bob Lorenz, Jack Curry and John Flaherty, remain largely unchanged. Flaherty will be doing some games too. Michael Kay, Paul O’Neill and David Cone will be the main Yankees’ TV booth, while Ryan Ruocco will be with Kay.
For the Mets, Gary Apple and Todd Linie will be the main studio team, with Anthony Recker spending more time receives. Jim Duquette will be back as a contributor. While Terry Collins and Omar Minaya could perform here or there, the plan isn’t much right now. Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling will be at the booth.
John Sterling (82) and Suzyn Waldman (74) are still going strong. While they won’t be traveling to start the season, the hope is that they may eventually be on the go. They’ll start both at home and on the go from Yankee Stadium.
At one point, WFAN, the home of the Yankees, toyed with the idea of giving Sterling some relief and making him miss a show here or there. But that’s not the plan. Sterling wants to be there every day – and the FAN won’t get in his way.
At WCBS, Howie Rose, a 67-year-old youngster, will be on the booth in a legendary New York broadcasting career. He is accompanied by Wayne Randazzo, who comes from Citi Field for both home and away games.
If 36-year-old Randazzo stays at the booth as long as Sterling, Randazzo will work until at least 2067.

Alex Rodriguez is back on the ESPN show with Matt Vasgersian. You will start in the studio. If the climate improves, ESPN can host some games at the events. In the meantime, FS1 will only use the local feeds for its games, but if Fox has them, the network will produce the games. Most of the time, the announcers will be far away. TBS doesn’t start its Sunday appointment until June and will bring its approach closer to its first game.
