Maybe he’s a chameleon. Or a quick change artist. Or rather just a very smart NBA player who reads his reality, adapts accordingly and gives his team whatever they need.

However you want to describe Kyle Lowry – and there are plenty of adjectives that can be used – He’s one of the smartest players to use the Raptors because he knows what to do and he just does it.

Lowry is poised to become the third player in Raptors history, the 10,000 Scored points in a Toronto uniform, 14 points after joining DeMar DeRozan and Chris Bosh. A toe infection kept him away from Toronto’s Miami game on Friday, but the milestone could come as early as Sunday when the Raptors visit Indiana.

« (The toe) was sore and he played it through (Wednesday), » said Raptor’s trainer Nick Nurse. « I expect he’s ready for the next one. »

There may be some surprises that it took Lowry so long to reach 10,000 points after playing 568 games with the Raptors. But that’s part of his basketball charm: he’s gone from mediator to top scorer to mediator to something in between in his nine seasons.

« I think it’s just a feeling for him … obviously I have studied and watched him a bit, « said fellow guard Fred VanVleet. « He knows pretty well when we need him to score. »

Lowry reads what his teammates’ strengths are, he knows what his are and he plays with them.

« I think when I got here he was really a setup man – run the team, bring the ball to the guys, « said the nurse. “The team has changed a little, he had to face more of a goal load, that’s what he did. He came out a few years ago and … saw the structure of the team (had changed) and averaged double-digit assists for a good part of the season. Then the team changes again and he returns to more of a scoring role.

« I think this is a sign of a really good player in general, the veteran who understands his role and who has changed throughout his career changed a little. «

VanVleet understands Lowry better than any current Raptor. You’re one of the most versatile guard tandems in the NBA today and you’ve managed to play off each other. VanVleet has benefited from Lowry’s leadership and ever-changing style. And VanVleet has always made it easy to ask a little more from Lowry and insisted that he be more aggressive.

« I think I am forcing this type of relationship on him, » said VanVleet. « I remember being a newbie and shaking hands with him before every game and telling him he was the best point guard for me in the NBA and for the first time he just looked at me like that kid crazy. «

Lowry had a somewhat average season by his standards. His score (18.2 points per game) is about the same, a little lower than last year but above his career average. His field goal percentage (.429) is roughly the same as usual. His three-point percentage (.359) reflects his past few seasons. And his templates (7.1 per game) are only slightly lower than in the previous two seasons. He just didn’t play a really big game in Toronto’s first 14.

« I think he’s playing as usual, playing hard and leading the team, » said Nurse. “Was a little streaky than normal, but it was good.”
