World news – LG WebOS 6.0 supports the magic functions of the new Magic Remote

It’s hard to pinpoint a clear winner in the wars of the smart TV platform. While Android TV has the benefit of a well-known brand and the support of Sony and Vizio, other major TV manufacturers have gone their own separate ways. Samsung has its Tizen-based operating system and LG has decided to invest in WebOS, which traces its origins back to the venerable Palm. In version 6.0, WebOS definitely took on a life of its own that is specific and, to some extent, limited to providing a comfortable and easy viewing experience.

Of course, LG’s WebOS 6.0 version has an updated user interface. The company talks about how the home screen has switched to frequently used apps and channels, and presents recommendations based on viewing habits and preferences. The real core of the update, however, is what the new Smart TV UX of the equally new Magic Remote enables.

The remote control itself has been redesigned to use as many sources and services as possible. While some smart TV or TV box remotes apparently only prefer Netflix, the new LG Magic Remote also has dedicated buttons for Amazon Prime and Disney. There are even dedicated buttons for Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

The Magic Remote lives up to its name with a feature called Magic Tap that is supported by NFC. With a simple tap on an NFC-equipped phone on the remote control, the linked LG Smart TV and smartphone can easily exchange content. Some Samsung Smart TVs have similar features. However, to do this you need to get up and tap your phone on the side of the TV.

LG WebOS 6.0 also has features that you would expect from today’s smart TV platforms. Magic Explorer is pretty much the equivalent of Amazon Prime’s X-Ray, and it allows viewers to view information about the content and actors that appear on the screen. Next Pick, on the other hand, uses your viewing history to recommend what to watch next, including those from live TV shows.
