The Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings get together for NHL action Tuesday night at the Staples Center.
The Colorado Avalanche will try to build on their 8-0 win over the Blues for their first win of the season last time. Neither team scored in the first half, but Colorado would break things up in the second half when Gabriel Landeskog opened with the first goal of the game just after the fourth minute of the second. Andre Burakovsky made it 2-0 at 12:24 before Landeskog scored his second goal just 2:10 later and Mikko Rantanen pushed it just 2:31 to 4-0. Nazem Kadri made it five 1:13 in the 3rd and Nathan MacKinnon and Joonas Donskoi would make it 6-0 and 7-0: 33 apart shortly after the middle of the 3rd. Devon Toews would put the cherry on top to 8-0 by a little more than five minutes, and the Blues wouldn’t even have a consolation goal as Colorado drove the lead to the finish. Philipp Grubauer won 1-1 after stopping all 21 shots for his first shutout of the year.
The Los Angeles Kings will try to get into the profit column after starting the year with two OT losses after losing 4-3 to OT last time to Minnesota. Minnesota opened the goal with just 21-21 before Gabriel Vilardi scored just over three minutes from time in the first minute. Blake Lizotte gave LA the lead just after the seven-minute mark of the second and Andreas Athanasiou made it 3-1 just 3:20 later and the lead went into the 3rd, but the Wild would pull one back at the 7:38 mark from the 3rd and tie the game with two seconds in regulation, forcing OT. Minnesota would end the comeback and the hearts of the Kings breaking with: 11 to go into the extra frame and give the Kings a second OT loss. Jonathan Quick took the defeat and fell to 0-0-2 after giving up all four goals in 44 shots in defeat.
Colorado is 14-4 in their last 18 street games and 12-4 in their last 16 street games, while the over is 10-2 in their last 12 games overall. Los Angeles is 5-2 in their last 7 games as underdogs and 4-1 in their last 5 games played on two rest days, while the one under 7-3-1 in their last 11 games total.
This is a heavy price to pay for the Avs, even after an 8-0 win, and Colorado have only lost one in their first two games and go to OT each time. However, this is still a Kings team I’m not sold to right now, and Colorado needs to feel as good as possible after blasting the doors of St. Louis the last time. I think the Avs are driving that momentum to get a puck line win and cover in this game. So give me Colorado -1.5 as my pick for this game.
