World news – Mackay Mann’s diagnostic journey to strike a new chord

Mackay will turn a purple hue on Friday to help raise awareness of epilepsy, a condition that more than 1,000 Australians are diagnosed each month.

Make March Purple for Epilepsy is Epilepsy Australia’s national campaign and Mackays Joanne Scott has teamed up to ensure the region is painted purple for the event.

« One of the biggest problems with dealing with epilepsy is that there isn’t enough awareness of what it is and how to deal with it, » she said.

The campaign aims to raise awareness and support for the 1240 Australians diagnosed with the disease in March alone.

He got off to a promising start to a potential football career before being diagnosed at the age of 13.

« I didn’t stop right away. I did my best to keep playing football, after all, Wally Lewis had epilepsy and he got his way, » said Johnston.

« But my seizures only went on, often triggered by stress. Before the game, some people vomited before the game, but I had seizures. »

He stopped playing because of the increased dangers and instead began creating and playing music under the stage name Lightning Nite.

He said that while epilepsy cost him a football career, physically injuring him on multiple occasions, and disrupting his social life, it was much more than just his condition.

People can help out by dressing in purple and buying Make March Purple for Epilepsy goods at participating venues in the area.

The goods are available from the Mackay Base Hospital gift shop, West Mackay United Chemists, Home Base at Mackay Base Hospital, Coal Port Pharmacy at Hay Point Superclinic and United Chemists in Andergrove.
