So far, three new NFL head coaches have been hired. The Houston Texans aren’t one of them, and given the ongoing situation with quarterback Deshaun Watson, there might not be a more difficult coaching search right now. Indianapolis Colts Defensive Coordinator Matt Eberflus originally didn’t want to interview the franchise, but he changed his mind.
Eberflus was in great demand after a great defensive season for Indianapolis. He conducted interviews with franchises early in the cycle, including the New York Jets, which partnered with the San Francisco 49ers DC Robert Saleh, and the Los Angeles Chargers. Now he’s thinking again about the Texans.
According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, Houston kept pushing for the 50-year-old to be interviewed. Ultimately, he agreed and will see if there is a seizure. The great unknown is how this name impresses Watson, who expressed his dissatisfaction with the franchise, namely team principal Cal McNair and consultant Jack Easterby, very clearly.
Matt Eberflus ended his third season as Colts DC after seven Years with the Dallas Cowboys. He got his first NFL coaching job in 2009 with the Cleveland Browns, where he coached linebackers.
The #Texans interviewed #Colts DC Matt Eberflus today per source for their job as head coach.
Eberflus initially declined an interview, but Houston made another boost in the past few days. A respected candidate who remains in the #Chargers mix.
According to Pelissero, Eberflus is still involved in the Los Angeles Chargers. Buffalo Bill’s OC Brian Daboll sounds like one of the main competitors out there, although it doesn’t sound like a hiring in the west is imminent. The Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars and Atlanta Falcons have already left the board with the hiring of Saleh, Urban Meyer and Arthur Smith.
These fan bases seem pretty excited, or at least happy, with their tips. Meanwhile, the Houston Texans are on their guard with their all-world quarterback.
