World news – McGeady saves Sunderland with a stunning late goal in the promotion battle

A day after his 35th birthday, Aiden McGeady scored a goal that could prove crucial in Sunderland’s bid for a return to the championship.

McGeady canceled Siriki Dembele’s opener and brought on the Black Cats drew 1-1 with a stunning 81st-minute free kick against Peterborough United.

The veteran Republic of Ireland international has scored six goals and made 13 assists since returning to the Sunderland team in December.

Sunderland remain in third place in the premier league, two points behind Peterborough United and five points behind leaders Hull City. However, they can secure their first place by winning their games in hand.

Peterborough midfielder Jack Taylor, the former Irish Under-21 international who joined Stephen Kenny’s roster for the Bulgaria game last November, started for the first time since February after sustaining a hamstring injury.

James Collins scored his eighth championship goal of the season but it was only consolation for Luton Town in their 2-1 home defeat to Barnsley.

After Conor Hourihane missed Ireland’s final games against Serbia, Luxembourg and Qatar with a hamstring injury had, he was back on the Swansea City team after his promotion hopes suffered a blow with a 1-0 home loss to Preston North End.
