BERGAMO, Italy: Ferland Mendy faced a late winner to give Real Madrid a 1-0 win over 10-man Atalanta in the Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday.
Real seemed to give up to have become much easier after Atalanta’s Remo Freuler was sent off in the 17th minute for denying Mendy a chance to score.
Zinedine Zidane’s team, who missed several top-class players due to injury, had against the 10 men, Trouble breaking the hosts and Real only had one shot on goal for the rest of the first half.
Atalanta continued to defend tenaciously after the break, but Mendy’s great 86th-minute goal gave the Spanish side a narrow lead on the second leg .
