The runner-up Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka passed Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova on Friday and won their first double crown at the Australian Open.
The Belgian-Belarusian combination turned out to be too strong for the third-placed Czech Couple who won 6-2, 6-3 at the Rod Laver Arena after sealing the game with their fourth championship point.
« It’s been a tough couple of weeks, so thanks everyone involved. I’m happy to have fans again, ”said Mertens.
It was their second Grand Slam success as a team after the US Open 2019 and their sixth title in the overall standings, as both of their defeats in the fourth round in singles in Melbourne Park rebounded.
The couple made their joint debut at the 2019 Australian Open and have since established themselves as one of the tour’s top teams along with two-time Grand Slam winners Krejcikova and Siniakova.
