Amid controversy over the renaming of a cricket stadium in Gujarat after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government said today that the name change will only affect Motera Stadium and the entire sports complex will continue to be named after Sardar Patel.
Shortly after the president Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the world’s largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad, now known as Narendra Modi Stadium, social media has been flooded with comments, including from some leaders of Congress and other opposition parties, who have claimed the renaming exercise is about to take place was an « insult » to Sardar Patel.
However, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said that only the Motera Stadium has been renamed and the complex will continue to be named after Vallabhbhai Patel.
Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, who said after a cabinet meeting was present at a press conference with Mr. Javadekar, threw the congressional committee rn also slammed and asked whether party leader Sonia Gandhi or Rahul Gandhi had praised the tallest statue of Sardar Patel in the world so far erected in Kevadiya in Gujarat.
Mr. Prasad continued: « I would like to say this with full responsibility, that a tourist place that is praised worldwide has not yet been visited or praised by the two conference directors. What else is there to say? «
Congress Director Shashi Tharoor tweeted: » You may have just realized that the stadium was named after an interior minister who banned their parent organization! Or maybe this is pre-booking to make sure the next head of state like Trump is accommodated here? Or is this « the beginning of a legacy creation-through-labeling spree? »
His party colleague Rajeev Satav said, « The renaming of the Motera cricket stadium from Sardar Patel to Narendra Modi is an absolute shame. This shows How narcissistic our Prime Minister has become. This is outrageous and a clear sign of autocratic dictatorship. «
Without speaking directly about the stadium, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tweeted a Hindi quote from Sardar Patel: » There is something unique in this soil, which despite many obstacles has always been the abode of great souls. «
