World news – Open Source and Edge Computing for Businesses: 4 Statistics to Know

Edge computing and enterprise open source are two important trends that have a lot to do with each other. Edge relies on an open hybrid cloud in order to achieve flexibility and consistency advantages for corporate IT. It’s a symbiotic relationship, as Rosa Guntrip, Senior Principal Marketing Manager for Cloud Platforms at Red Hat recently discovered.

« Organizations need flexibility in where to place their workloads and when their If strategy changes, they need consistent execution – for both ITOps and developers, so that they can react quickly and with minimal disruption, ”says Guntrip.

The open source report on the company status 2021 contains some data points that the relationship between edge, enterprise open source, and other critical trends such as hybrid cloud and digital transformation. Let’s take a look:

Enterprise open source is widely used in emerging technology areas in general. 79 percent of the survey participants assume that they will increasingly use open source for this purpose for companies in the next two years. Edge computing – and the associated Internet of Things (IoT) use case – is where usage is highest: Today, 55 percent of these use cases are open source for companies. That’s already a large number, but it is expected to shoot up to 72 percent in the next two years.

Open source innovations play a critical role in ensuring that open and interoperable solutions across a broad ecosystem be created. Edge computing is about multiple infrastructures and platforms that work with and integrate with a variety of software stacks. Enterprise open source is a natural fit.

Edge computing, by definition, extends across different types of infrastructures from the network edge to the data center core (whether on-premises, in a public cloud, or both). An edge strategy is a detection that doesn’t allow all data and storage to be pulled into the core doesn’t work for many purposes. Bandwidth, latency, and resilience are just a few of the reasons why a strategy based solely on centralization is often not optimal.

But consistency is key. This consistency is provided in part by open source platforms and integration software. The goal should be to avoid edge deployments that consist of isolated technology islands.

The survey found that a hybrid or multi-cloud approach is the norm. Only 34 percent said they only use a single public cloud. For another data point, the 2020 CNCF survey by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation found that the number of organizations with local infrastructure grew faster than the number of public clouds between 2019 and 2020. (Some of these results can be difficult to interpret as different people use terms differently, but the general trends should be highlighted.)

Data is a big part of digital transformation. This applies in part to data analysis with artificial intelligence / machine learning (AI / ML), another important open source technology area for companies. Certainly the large amounts of data associated with AI / ML are a big driver for architectures that reduce the need to send large amounts of unfiltered data back to a central location.

However, it is also about bringing functions closer to services and Distribute users, which can improve response times and resilience against network problems. Factors like these can be critical in areas like healthcare.

This relationship between edge computing and digital transformation also attracts open source to businesses. I’ve already discussed the direct relationship between Edge and Enterprise Open Source. Open source for companies is also related to digital transformation. In fact, the majority (54 percent) of respondents say digital transformation is an important use of open source for businesses, a number that has increased 11 points in the past two years.

This is in the Consistent with an overall improvement in the corporate view of open source within organizations. IT leaders are increasingly seeing open source as suitable for strategically important initiatives including digital transformation.

Finally, we are only seeing a general correspondence between the attributes associated with enterprise open source and those required for edge computing. For example, 84 percent consider open source an important part of their company’s security strategy. In fact, 87 percent see open source as « safer » or « as secure » as proprietary software for businesses. Security is certainly a hot edge computing and IoT issue. Of course, it’s a hot topic for corporate IT as a whole.

Other high-level attributes are also clear edge requirements. 81 percent said that open source offers companies the flexibility to adapt solutions to a company’s requirements. This is the interoperability and integration required for Edge, which I discussed earlier.

Respondents also highlighted how open source is helping organizations leverage cloud architectures (80 percent) and adopting a hybrid -Cloud architecture simplify (78 percent). Again, these are the core requirements for creating an edge architecture that would not exist without hybrid cloud.

Finally, there is access to innovation, an open source enterprise benefit that IT decision makers increasingly appreciate. 82 percent of respondents said that enterprise open source is used by the most innovative companies.

Edge computing is one of the most important areas for technological growth. Market researcher International Data Corporation (IDC) predicts that the global edge computing market will reach 250.6 billion US dollars in 2024, with an average annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.5 percent over the forecast period 2019-2024. Open source for companies provides everything companies need to be successful with their edge strategies.
