Phil Mickelson had one of the worst holes in his life in the first round of the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio.
The 50-year-old Mickelson, who now also plays a few events on the Champions Tour, scored a 10 on par-5 18 when he took two penalty shots and three more strokes to get off a green stream.
He finished with a 7-over 79, 15 shots behind leader Camilo Villegas who fired a first lap of 64.
The 10 was tied for his second worst hole of his PGA Tour career, according to Golfweek. He carded an 11 once at Pebble Beach in 2008 and scored 10 at the 2018 US Open and the Arnold Palmer Invitational 2000.
Mickelson’s last hole on the Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio got off to a promising start with a booming 306 -Yard drive into the middle of the fairway.

Mickelson tried to hit the green in half on his second shot, but his ball only missed the green and crashed into a stream running down the right side of the green and through the fairway flows.
After a penalty, Mickelson’s fourth shot fell short and rolled back into the rough under the green. His fifth couldn’t get on the green, as did his sixth. His seventh shot hit the rock face and rolled back into danger behind him.
After another penalty, Mickelson, who dropped to 106th in the golf world rankings, ran one on the back of the green, 15 feet from the hole.
And of course he sank in the typical « Phil the Thrill « fashion the tricky putt to make 10.
In addition to Mickelson’s disaster on the final hole, he had a three-putt within nine feet and missed the next hole by less than four feet, but he had done it to be only 2 through 17 before the chaos hit.
Mickelson has won five majors in his career, along with 44 PGA Tour wins. But that’s not the kind of dynamic « Lefty » – who won three green jackets – was looking for after entering next week’s Masters at Augusta National.
