Commercial baby food is often contaminated with « significant amounts » of heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, cadmium and mercury – which, according to a congressional report published on Thursday, can lead to « irreversible » problems in brain development.
» The Food and Drug Administration and the World Health Organization have declared them dangerous to human health, especially babies and children, who are most susceptible to their neurotoxic effects, « the report says.
» Even low exposure can seriously and often irreversibly damage brain development, « added the report released by the Economic and Consumer Policy Subcommittee.
On November 6, 2019, the committee requested internal documents and test results from seven of the largest baby food manufacturers in the US after reports of suspected high levels of toxic metals.
Four of the companies men – Nurture, Beech-Nut, Hain and Gerber – responded to the subcommittee’s inquiries.
« The subcommittee is very concerned that the lack of cooperation has resulted in even higher levels of toxic heavy metals in their baby food products than in their products The report said that mercury was found in baby food from the only responding company, Nurture, to test for it.
Beech-Nut and Hain don’t even test for mercury in baby food, while Gerber rarely tests for mercury in baby food, according to the report.
The report recommends that the FDA set the maximum levels for toxic heavy metals in baby food and encourage companies to test their finished products – not just their various ingredients – for the To test metals.
“Baby food manufacturers have a special position of public trust. Consumers believe they are not selling unsafe products. Consumers also believe the federal government would not knowingly allow unsafe baby food to be sold, « the report reads.
» As this employee report shows, baby food manufacturers and federal regulators have broken the faith of the Trump administration » he added.
