Davis announced Thursday that he had bought the Las Vegas Aces from the WNBA. MGM Resorts International was the previous owner of the WNBA franchise.
« I’m pleased to announce that I have reached an agreement to purchase the Las Vegas franchise in the WNBA from MGM Resorts International, » said Davis in an explanation. « I will have more to say once I get official approval from the WNBA Board of Governors and have a chance to speak to the players, coaches and the team administration. »
The Aces have been in Vegas since the 2018 season . Before that, the aces were in San Antonio.
The aces have been one of the best teams in the WNBA for the past two seasons and each made it to the conference finals. After falling in four games against the Washington Mystics in the conference’s final final, the aces rebounded this season by beating the Connecticut Sun in five games en route to the WNBA finals.
The aces did, however failed to keep up with Sue Bird, Breanna Stewart and the Storm and were swept into three games. It was an impressive season for the Aces, though.
Mark Davis will now take over the ownership of the Aces. He has long been known as a supporter of women’s basketball – his latest purchase proves it. It will be interesting to see which way the aces go with Davis.
