Renault’s Formula 1 team boss, Cyril Abiteboul, is leaving the French automaker, was announced on Monday.
The Frenchman was expected to join the renamed Alpine squad after a management shake-up takes on a new role within the company. Instead, he is leaving completely.
His exit has resulted in Laurent Rossi, Director of Strategy and Business Development at Renault, being appointed CEO of Alpine.
Rossi will be the Alpine cars, the F1 team and take on other motorsport activities. He will report directly to Luca de Meo, Renault’s CEO.
Abiteboul’s position as F1 squad leader is expected to be taken over by Marcin Budkowski.
When Abiteboul spoke about his departure, said he feels he has left a strong foundation for the growth of the French automaker.
« I would like to thank Groupe Renault for trusting me for many years, especially when relaunching and rebuilding the team since 2016 » he said.
« The solid foundations of the racing team and units in France and England built during these years, the strategic evolution of the sport towards a more economically sustainable model and, more recently, the Alpine project being a new one A feeling for meaning and dynamism conveyed pointing to a very fine trajectory. «
De Meo added: » I would like to thank Cyril for his tireless commitment, especially the Renault F1 team from the penultimate one Place in 2016 led to the podium last season.
« His remarkable work in F1 since 2007 enables us to look to the future with a strong team and the new identity of the Alpine F1 team, to take the podium this year. «
Abiteboul is an imperturbable Renault who originally joined the company after graduating. He worked for the F1 team from 2007 before moving to Executive Director in 2010.
He returned to Renault as Managing Director and played a key role in the French automaker’s return to F1 as a factory team in 2016.
