Morgan Cibilic has been limping around the Newcastle Cup for days, fearing that he will no longer be able to surf after a broken toe and severe bone bruises in his foot.
Not only was Cibilic able to surf, he claimed the biggest scalp of his young world touring career when he ousted the world’s number 1 John John Florence from the competition in a massive uproar.
Cibilic, who surfed on his home break at Merewether Beach, scored a score of 17.13 with 8.10 and 9.03 rides to knock Florence out of the World Surf League event.
Florence produced a 13.16 (7.83 and 5.33) but it wasn’t good enough against the rampaging rookie who said he had « nothing to lose » as he went into the heat against one of the world’s best surfers.
« I didn’t even think I could surf a few days ago, » said the Newcastle youngster, whose board hit his foot in a practice surf.
« It hurt a bit, was badly hurt and sore, but then for the last 24 hours it just seemed to get a little better and I started walking around.
« But today was my first surf in four days after I floated and my board exploded in my foot. »
Also on Thursday, surfer Wade Carmichael from the Central Coast and another Ryan Callinan from Merewether advanced.
The Newcastle Cup has sparked a number of surprises, including both Tyler Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons, who were banned from women’s competition before the quarter-finals.
The Newcastle event replaces the traditional competition at Bells Beach with the next installment in the WSL series, which will be held in Narrabeen later this month.
Having these events at home is a huge benefit for Australian surfers as Cibilic makes the most of the Thursday opportunity.
