World news – Steam Remote Play Together allows you to play with friends who do not have Steam

Steam’s nifty feature of allowing you to play local co-op games online with your friends just gets even more nifty. In Steam’s Steam Beta client, Remote Play Together can now be used to invite anyone to play with you, even if they don’t have a Steam account. All he has to do is install an app.

Launched in 2019, Remote Play Together is a feature that allows users to play local co-op games online with others who do not own the game. I’ve used it a few times myself to play things like moving out and it works pretty well as long as the person hosting it has enough internet (it works by essentially streaming the game to your friends ).

In order to use the feature with a friend or family member without Steam, you must use the Beta branch of Steam (which you can activate by toggling the « Beta Participation » section in your account settings). Once logged in, open a game that supports Remote Play Together and go to an invite link from your friends list in the Steam overlay. Send this link to anyone you want to play with (on Windows, iOS, Android, or Raspberry Pi) and they’ll be prompted to download the Steam Link app.

To the sounds of Valve’s explainer, opening the app should quickly connect to you and your game after downloading it. If you have regular Steam installed, it will be used instead to join the game.

It sounds pretty neat, especially if you want to play something with a friend or family member who isn’t that tech savvy (hi dad). The only downside is that you can only have a player without an account join from the link. Therefore, any other players that you would like to have in this session must be invited through Steam.

In other parts of the Steam world, Valve is trying to encourage developers to care more about controllers. Lots of people play Steam games with controllers (hello), and one of the things Valve suggests is making greater use of the PlayStation button icons so that players using these controllers don’t have to constantly try to understand Xbox inputs.
